Navigating the At-Home Testing Ethics Debate

Head of Design · October 2021 — September 2022

How do you market health testing to people who are already healthy?

Building an at-home health testing product for Holland & Barrett meant confronting a question the technology alone couldn't answer: how do you market preventative health testing to people who are, by most measures, already healthy.

The team spent real time on this rather than treating it as a formality. Encouraging healthy people to test at home has genuine public health value, but it also carries the risk of causing unnecessary anxiety or prompting people to act on results without proper context. Getting the balance right meant working closely with H&B's health directors to make sure the product's language, framing, and follow-up guidance never overstated what a home test could tell someone, while still making the case for why testing mattered.

That discipline shaped the product as much as any technical decision did. Ivie launched with the trust of H&B's own medical leadership behind it, which mattered as much to its success as the six-month build itself.
