Totaljobs // Website Re-design
Totaljobs is one of the largest job boards in the world. They boast 150,000 job applications a month through their platform and have over 2 million unique visits to their site - something I helped them achieve with the re-design of their decade old website.
My Role
Mid-Level Web Designer
July 2014 - July 2015
I was hired by TotalJobs to join the web design team and help maintain the standards of the current website. It wasn’t long before I challenged how out of touch the current design was, and suggested to my manager we do something about it. We had a meeting with the Head of our department, and not too long after, I was tasked with re-designing the entire landing page - the first time it had been touched by a designer for ten years.
The Original Site
Evaluating the old site
The first steps of the re-design were to go through the site map and determine what information was absolutely necessary, and which could be removed. There were so many elements that distracted from the site’s primary function - to search for jobs, and this was what I was going to focus on. Making this the simplest job searching website going.
Designing the new site
As you can see the difference is massive. I decided to raise the profile of the search bar, and draw more attention to the quick links for jobs by sector, location, company etc. I also added a job ad counter, and the amount of companies that were registered on the site, to give the user a sense that the site they were dealing with had gravitas. Once our app was ready, I decided to afford it the second most real-estate, and surrounded it with white space so it would stand out below the fold. The homepage was now essentially in two parts - 1 part search functionality and 1 part advert for our app.
I worked closely with the dedicated UX team on this project to make sure the site was responsive and user-focussed, many of whom I’m still friends with today. We carried out user testing on people within the Blue Fin Building, using paper and electronic prototypes, 5-second tests and simple navigational tasks.
I had regular meetings with key stakeholders, and one meeting I chaired with the Heads of every department, to get them excited about the re-design.
The project took 8 months to complete, and 4 months after completion, we measured that we had raised the monthly unique visits by 2 million.
